New! Data on SGM Youth in Hawaiʻi

In February 2024, the Hawaiʻi Department of Health released data on the health of sexual and gender minority (SGM) high school students from 2017-2019. Findings from the data summary include:

  • 1 in 20 local high school students identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual
  • 1 in 10 local high school students are questioning their orientation
  • Over 2% of local high school students identify as transgender
  • Over 2% of local high school students are unsure of their gender

The data summary also identifies health disparities when comparing SGM students to non-SGM students, especially related to healthcare access, bullying and violence, mental health, substance use, and protective factors.

By request of community partners, the findings were provided in highly visual, presentation format to be shared more easily. The data summary was a follow up to landmark Hawaiʻi SGM Health reports from 2017 and 2018.
