Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea, the second most commonly reported STI in Hawai‘i, is caused by the bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Gonorrhea can cause very serious complications when not treated, but can be cured with the right antibiotics. Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems, such as infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease in women, and a painful condition in the tubes attached to the testicles in men (epididymitis). In 2018, Hawaii was ranked 42nd in the U.S. for rates of chlamydia cases (104.7 per 100,000 population).
