Data on Hep B among Immigrants

In February 2024, the Hawaiʻi Journal of Health and Social Welfare published an article which analyzed hepatitis B testing data among foreign-born Asian and Pacific Islander patients at a community health center in Honolulu from 2015 to 2020. Data was made available through the Enhanced Hepatitis B Screening Program, a collaboration between the Harm Reduction Services Branch and Kalihi-Palama Health Center. The findings included:

  • About 1 out of 10 of tested patients had chronic hepatitis B (CHB);
  • About 3 times higher odds of CHB if the patient lived with someone with hep B;
  • About 3 times higher odds of CHB if the patient was 35 to 44 years old (compared to those over 65 years old).
