OVERVIEW

The STI/HIV Prevention Program at the Hawaiʻi Department of Health’s (HIDOH) Harm Reduction Services Branch and the California Prevention Training Center (CAPTC) are offering a live webinar for healthcare providers and community service providers, titled, Syphilis Update: Understanding the Concerning Rise in Maternal and Congenital Syphilis in Hawaii. Providers who work with communities that face cultural, economic and language barriers to obtaining good prenatal and neonatal care may find this webinar especially informative. 

After this webinar participants will be able to: 

• Describe the role of the local health department in syphilis follow-up and case investigation. 
• Summarize current syphilis epidemiology in Hawaii including syphilis among pregnant women and congenital syphilis. 
• Outline best practices for clinical management of syphilis including diagnosis, staging, treatment and follow-up 

To follow this event will be a series of Clinician Learning Community sessions for healthcare providers who work with pregnant women and newborns from communities experiencing higher rates of congenital syphilis. Capacity is limited, please visit this link for more information.

SPEAKERS

Ina Park, MD, MS 
Associate Professor, UCSF School of Medicine  
Medical Director, California Prevention Training Center  
Dr. Park is the Medical Director of the Clinical Team at the California Prevention Training  Center.  She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at   the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and a Medical Consultant in the Division of STD Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  She is a co-author of the forthcoming 2020 CDC STD Treatment Guidelines, the country’s premier resource for diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. 

Sharon Adler, MD, MPH 
Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF School of Medicine 
Clinical Faculty, California Prevention Training Center 
Dr. Adler is clinical faculty at the California Prevention Training Center and is Assistant Clinical Professor at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), in the department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Adler has worked in the STD field for 20 years including 10 years of work at the California Department of Public Health STD Control Branch. She is board certified in Preventive Medicine/Public Health and has clinical experience working in community health and public health clinics in the San Francisco bay area as well as at the San Francisco STD City Clinic. In her current position Dr. Adler develops curricula, conducts, and coordinates STD trainings.  

Glenn Wasserman, MD, MPH 
Chief, Hawaii Department of Health, Communicable Disease and Public Health Nursing Division 
Dr. Glenn Wasserman is the Chief of the Communicable Disease and Public Health Nursing Division at the Hawaii Department of Health.  His division covers TB, HIV, STDs, Hansen’s disease and Public Health Nursing activities for the State of Hawaii.  He has been in this position for almost 15 years.  Dr. Wasserman is boarded in General Pediatrics as well as Preventive Medicine & Public Health, completed a medical research fellowship at Walter Reed and NIH, and received his Masters of Public Health Degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
