OVERVIEW

The Learning Community for Clinicians: Testing, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Maternal and Congenital Syphilis is a series of four, 1-hour sessions designed for health care providers who work with pregnant women and newborns from communities that face cultural, economic and language barriers to obtaining good prenatal and neonatal care. 

This event is provided on behalf of the STI/HIV Prevention Program at the Hawaiʻi Department of Health’s (HIDOH) Harm Reduction Services Branch and the California Prevention Training Center (CAPTC). 

After the Learning Community Series, learners will be able to: 

  • Describe CDC treatment scenarios for congenital syphilis and diagnostic testing recommended in the evaluation of congenital syphilis 
  • Discuss management of penicillin allergy when treating syphilis in pregnancy 
  • Describe recommendations for serologic follow-up after treatment for syphilis in pregnancy

  • 10/27/20, 12-1PM (HST) – Focus: Syphilis During Pregnancy 
  • 11/10/20, 12-1PM (HST) – Focus: Congenital Syphilis 
  • 11/17/20, 12-1PM (HST) – Focus: Case discussions

Targeted Audience: Health care providers who work with pregnant women and newborns from communities that face cultural, economic and language barriers to obtaining good prenatal and neonatal care. 
Location: Web-based 
CME Units: Offered at no cost, only those registered will be eligible to receive 4.0 CME credits. Contingent upon attending all LC sessions and completing the post-course survey evaluation. No partial credit given. All sessions must be completed by November 24, 2020.

PRESENTERS AND FACILITATORS

Ina Park, MD, MS
Associate Professor, UCSF School of Medicine  
Medical Director, California Prevention Training Center  
Dr. Park is the Medical Director of the Clinical Team at the California Prevention Training  Center.  She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at   the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and a Medical Consultant in the Division of STD Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  She is a co-author of the forthcoming 2020 CDC STD Treatment Guidelines, the country’s premier resource for diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. 

Rosalyn Poltzker, MD, MPH 
Assistant Professor, UCSF School of Medicine 
Clinical Faculty, California Prevention Training Center 
Dr. Plotzker serves as clinical faculty for the California Prevention Training Center. She is an assistant professor in the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and also performs high resolution anoscopy at the UCSF Anal Neoplasia Clinic, Research and Education (ANCRE) Center. Rosalyn completed a fellowship in Sexually Transmitted Diseases with CAPTC and the California Department of Public Health where she also currently serves as a public health medical officer and clinical lead for congenital syphilis prevention and also leads efforts to improve HIV prevention and STD screening with the California Office of AIDS. Rosalyn directs for the Virtual Approach to Gynecology Project, a virtual reality gynecologic training module for medical trainees.  

Sharon Adler, MD, MPH
Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF School of Medicine 
Clinical Faculty, California Prevention Training Center 
Dr. Adler is clinical faculty at the California Prevention Training Center and is Assistant Clinical Professor at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), in the department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Adler has worked in the STD field for 20 years including 10 years of work at the California Department of Public Health STD Control Branch. She is board certified in Preventive Medicine/Public Health and has clinical experience working in community health and public health clinics in the San Francisco bay area as well as at the San Francisco STD City Clinic. In her current position Dr. Adler develops curricula, conducts, and coordinates STD trainings.
