Chemical Safety Days
2023
Lithium-Ion Battery Emergency Preparedness and Response The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), State of Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) Hazard Evaluation and Emergency Response Office (HEER), United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), industry, first responders, and other interested constituencies are partnering to provide free overarching Lithium-Ion Battery Emergency Preparedness and Response training, as well as a tabletop exercise based on a Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) incident scenario. Registrants will receive meeting location and other logistical information once it is finalized (see links below). Audience: Public safety and industry first responders, facility leaders and owners, Local Emergency Response Committee members and other interested parties. Objective: To learn about Lithium-Ion Batteries including potential hazards, fire-related response approaches and how to appropriately address, transport and dispose of waste generated by a fire event. The day is designed to help participants familiarize themselves with the Lithium-Ion Battery emergency response process; gain connections with local industrial, first responders, and government personnel; and encourage facilities and first responders to evaluate their emergency response practices. The training and exercises will be a no-fault environment with a focus on emergency preparedness and response efforts aimed at preventing or minimizing the impacts of incidents and will not involve enforcement personnel. We extend our sincere gratitude to all participants and agencies involved in contributing to the success of these trainings. Our primary objective is to continually acquaint this community with response processes and connections within an industry and technology that constantly evolves. We have set up a webpage with the presentations and resources. It is intended as a dynamic resource page that will be updated as additional resources and updates become available.
