The HEER Office is overseeing a lead in soil assessment and response action at Kolekole Gulch Park on Hawaiʻi Island by the Hawaiʻi State Department of Transportation, Highways Division (DOT). The soils under the grass below the Kolekole Stream Bridge and within Kolekole Gulch Park have been impacted by lead. The Hawaiʻi County Department of Parks and Recreation closed public access to Kolekole Gulch Park on 4/18/2017 pending additional assessment and evaluation of the lead-impacted soil. Additional assessment has since been conducted and interim measures have been put in place to minimize potential lead exposure to people enjoying the park upon its re-opening. Long-term cleanup actions are currently being evaluated.

HDOH has prepared an updated Fact Sheet regarding the lead-impacted soil response action for the Kolekole Beach Park.
