ATSDR Response to Kauaʻi Public Health Assessment Request
Posted on Sep 1, 2016 in All, Public Health ProjectsIn October 2014, community members from Kauaʻi requested that the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) perform a Public Health Assessment on the west side of Kauaʻi due to environmental health concerns associated with pesticide use by nearby agricultural operations. On August 15, 2016, ATSDR responded to the requestors, stating that:
“To address the communities’ concerns, ATSDR obtained and reviewed reports, environmental sampling results, and human health statistical information from various federal, state, and local agencies, and University of Hawaiʻi. In addition, ATSDR cross-referenced and reviewed the recently finalized report, Pesticide Use by Large Agribusinesses on Kauaʻi: Findings and Recommendations of the Joint Fact Finding Study Group (the “JFF Study Group report”), coordinated by the ACCORD 3.0 Network. ATSDR did not locate any additional relevant information or data than those obtained and discussed in the JFF Study Group report”.
