As a result of falls every year in Hawaii, on average 130 seniors die, 1,900 are hospitalized and 9,400 are treated in emergency departments resulting in almost $207 million dollars in hospital and physician charges. Falls disproportionately affect the elderly and increase dramatically in the years after age 65. Falls and fall-related injuries impose an enormous burden on individuals, society and Hawaii’s health care system.

4 Fall Prevention Tips for Seniors

4 Fall Prevention Tips for Seniors

DOH offers the following important advice to seniors, their family members, and caregivers to prevent falls and fall-related injuries that can limit mobility and independence:

  • have your doctor or pharmacist review your medications yearly;
  • have your eyes checked annually;
  • make your home safer by removing fall hazards, and improve your lighting; and
  • exercise regularly; it increases balance and flexibility.
  • If You Live Alone – Get A Personal Electronic Safety Device. These small devices save lives every day.  There are many styles and companies to choose from so check with your favorite store or health provider. Call the State Health Department at 733-9202 for additional information on these devices.

The Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) and the Hawaii Fall Prevention Consortium in collaboration with, Pharmacare Hawaii, TIMES Supermarkets, FOODLAND Supermarkets, KTA Superstores on the Big Isle, Molokai Drugs, City Mill, and the Hawaii Community Pharmacy Association are sponsoring the statewide Senior Fall Prevention Awareness Campaign from June 17 to July 27. The campaign features award winning educational videos, information about medication reviews, balance testing, and workshops that focus on preventing falls among older adults.

In addition, City Mill will host two “Meet and Greet’s” with home safety experts from the Department of Health; on July 20th at their downtown Nimitz location, and on July 27th at their Pearl City location.  Both will be from 09:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.
