Facility Access

The Facility Access Unit’s responsibilities are to:

  • Review and provide recommendations on all state and county plans and specifications for buildings and facilities in order to ensure compliance with Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) §103-50 and Hawaii Administrative Rules Chapter 11-216.
  • Conduct review of codes, standards, and other design guidelines for access for persons with disabilities, including clarifications of the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) and Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines (FHAG) for state and county buildings and facilities.
  • Provide technical assistance through responses to questions via fax, phone, and email inquires, training, site surveys, and other public education efforts to government agencies and design professionals on the requirements for accessible design.

Facility Access Unit is staffed by Rodney Kanno, Facility Access Coordinator; Eric Isidro,  Alan Tarumoto, Glenn Arakaki, Jarrett Okutsu, and Nathan Iwamasa, Facility Access Specialists; Laurie Palenske, Facility Access Support Specialist; and Mylynne Simon, Office Assistant.
