Drinking Water

Richard Saiki supervises the Drinking Water Chemistry laboratories. The Drinking Water Chemistry Section of the Environmental Health Analytical Services Branch is certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct chemical analysis for the State of Hawaii. Over 105 chemical contaminates are routinely monitored using established EPA methodology to provide reliable and timely chemical data that is used by the Hawaii Department of Health Safe Drinking Water Branch to fulfill their mission of safeguarding public health by protecting Hawaii’s drinking water sources from contamination. The Drinking Water Chemistry Section is a well-equipped laboratory with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation.

Presently we are monitoring for:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds by Purge and Trap Gas Chromatography
  • Pesticide and Herbicide analysis by Gas Chromatography and High Performance Liquid Chromatography
  • Trace Metals by Inductively Couple Plasma-Mass Spectrometry, Graphite Furnace and Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy
  • Inorganic Anions by Ion Chromatography

In addition we utilize sample preparation by Automated Solid Phase Extraction or use Micro-extraction techniques that minimize our use of solvents for a greener workplace.
