Surfers Myelopathy

Surfer’s myelopathy (SM) is a rare, non-traumatic spinal cord injury, usually in new surfers, caused by intense hyperextension of the lower back while paddling, which temporarily cuts blood flow (ischemia) to the spinal cord, leading to pain, weakness, numbness, and potentially paralysis below the waist (paraplegia).
