Statewide Waste Characterization Study

DOH is conducting the first statewide waste characterization study using federal funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grant program. The SWIFR grant is authorized by the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act and funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This statewide waste characterization study will provide baseline data for DOH’s Needs Assessment for an Extended Producer Responsibility Study and inform future policies and practices needed to maintain solid waste management services for residents of Hawaiʻi. The study will collect waste stream data from the following five locations on four islands.

Oʻahu:    H-POWER, PVT Landfill

Maui:      Central Maui Landfill

Big Island:   West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill

Kauaʻi:      Kekaha Landfill
