Universal Waste Collectors (Large Quantity Handlers of Universal Waste)

Universal Waste (UW) is a term used for a group of hazardous wastes that many of us come across in our daily lives, whether at home or in businesses. In Hawaii, universal waste includes batteries, fluorescent lamps, aerosol cans, solar panels, electronic items, mercury-containing devices (such as thermostats), and certain pesticides. Because these types of hazardous waste are so common, there are special rules in place to make managing them safely easier for generators (chapter 11-273.1, HAR). Click here for rules and guidebooks.

Universal waste collectors are Large Quantity Handlers of UW that collect and store UW from other generators and ensure its proper transport to designated facilities for recycling or disposal in accordance with chapter 11-273.1, HAR.
