About This Disease
What to know
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are where algae grow rapidly in bodies of water and produce toxins that can be detrimental to human and animal health and ecosystems. These blooms can occur in various aquatic environments, including freshwater lakes, rivers, and marine coastal waters. HABs can look like foam, scum, or paint on the surface of the body of water. They can also grow underneath the water which can make it difficult to notice. While not all algal blooms are harmful, blooms of algae can harm people, animals, or the environment if they:
- Make toxins
- Become too dense
- Use up oxygen in the water
- Release harmful gases
Understanding HABs
- Types of algae: HABs are typically caused by species of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), dinoflagellates, and diatoms, which produce toxins under certain conditions.
- Toxin Production: Toxins can accumulate in water, affecting fish, shellfish, and other aquatic organisms. Some toxins are also harmful to humans and animals through direct contact or consumption of the contaminated water or seafood.
- Conditions: HABs often thrive in warm, nutrient-rich waters with low flow conditions.
Where HABs are found
HABs can grow in fresh or saltwater, or a mixture of both which is known as brackish water, these can include waters used for recreation and drinking. HABs can be found world-wide and, in the United States, they have been reported in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms in humans
If you have been in, near, or consumed water that has HABs, you may develop mild to moderate symptoms such as:
- Stomach pain
- Rash
- Headache
- Vomiting
If you suspect you are experiencing symptoms caused by HABs, contact a healthcare provider or call the Poison Control hotline at 1-800-222-1222.
Signs and symptoms in animals
Animals such as pets, livestock, and wildlife can also become very sick from contacting or consuming water with HABs. Symptoms of an illness in animals include:
- Vomiting
- Fatigue
- Stumbling or falling
- Seizures
Contact a veterinarian immediately if your animal starts to show any of these signs and symptoms. Animals who become sick from HABs can become ill and die within hours of ingesting the toxins. You can also call toll free the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661. (Note: There may be a fee for Pet Poison Helpline calls).
Risk in Hawaii
People and animals can become ill from being in contact with water or food that contains toxins from HABs. You or an animal can get sick if you:
- Go in or are near contaminated water
- Swallow contaminated water
- Eat contaminated fish or shellfish
- Use contaminated cyanobacteria or blue-green algae dietary supplements
Prevention
Before visiting water, precautions you can take to avoid getting sick are:
- Staying out of and keeping pets away from water that is discolored, scummy, or smells bad
- Check for and follow swimming, fishing, and shellfish advisories
- Follow guidance from local officials if you drink or use water that is contaminated with HABs
