HONOLULU – The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) issued a yellow placard to Papa Kurt’s located at 808 Sheridan St. on Sept. 21, 2023.

The food establishment, operated by SaiminSays LLC, initially received a red placard on Sept. 20, 2023 during an attempted routine inspection when a DOH inspector was denied entry into the food establishment and the inspector immediately shut down Papa Kurt’s.

The employee subsequently removed the placard, which by law, is illegal to deface, mar, camouflage, hide or remove the placard. Additionally, food establishments must not interfere with DOH inspections.

An inspector returned to Papa Kurt’s on Sept. 21, 2023. The inspector issued the food establishment a yellow placard and approved its reopening after the establishment allowed the inspector entry to conduct the inspection.

The inspector issued the establishment a yellow placard for the following violations:

  • No soap at the designated handwashing sink; and
  • Improper cold holding temperatures for cheese, sliced tomato and macaroni salad.

A follow-up inspection is scheduled at a later date to check whether the food establishment corrected the violations.

The DOH Food Safety Branch protects and promotes the health of Hawai‘i residents and visitors through education of food industry workers and regulation of food establishments statewide. The branch conducts routine health inspections of food establishments where food products are prepared, manufactured, distributed, or sold.
