Title V Maternal & Child Health Needs Assessment

WHAT

Every state receives federal funding – the Title V Maternal & Child Health (MCH) Services Block Grant – to improve public health systems for mothers, children, youth & families, including those with special health care needs. This funding requires a regular needs assessment.

WHO

The Family Health Services Division (FHSD) of the Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) conducts this needs assessment. Its guiding principles are equity focus, community engagement & public input.

WHY

This is a great way to learn about the health & well-being of Hawaii’s women, children, youth & families! By hearing directly from them & from the partner organizations that serve them, Hawaii can better understand the issues facing this population, especially in the wake of the pandemic & disasters like the Maui wildfires. Changing population demographics, emerging health trends & shifting program capacity make it necessary to regularly assess Hawaii’s MCH needs. What is learned from this assessment is used to identify priorities that can be effectively addressed through 2030.
