National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Certified Wastewater Treatment Units
In accordance with HAR 11-62-33.1(b)(2), household aerobic systems, which perform BOD and TSS reduction, must meet NSF/ANSI Standard No. 40 for Class 1 (one) units.
In accordance with HRS 342D-61 household aerobic systems that discharge directly to groundwater must meet NSF/ANSI Standard No. 245 for Nitrogen Reduction.
International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials – Research and Testing (IAPMO R&T) Wastewater Systems Certification
In accordance with HAR 11-62-33.1(a)(2), septic tanks must meet IAPMO/ANSI Z1000.

In accordance with HAR 11-62-35, the Department of Health Wastewater Branch has reviewed and approved Individual Wastewater Systems that do not fit within our typical framework of rules, but have demonstrated through appropriate testing performed by a university or independent research laboratory to be acceptable for use in the State of Hawaii.
