Hawai‘i Department of Health and Environmental Protection Agency to hold public meeting on U.S. Navy’s proposed tank upgrade alternatives for Red Hill Bulk Fuel Tank Storage Facility in November

HONOLULU — The U.S. Navy and the Defense Logistics Agency have announced they have completed their proposed plans to implement the best available, practicable technology to ensure the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Tank Storage Facility is operated and maintained in an environmentally protective manner.

The Navy’s tank upgrade alternatives and release detection document is available online at https://www.epa.gov/red-hill. It can also be viewed in person at the Department of Health’s Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch at 2827 Waimano Home Road, #100 in Pearl City.

Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are reviewing the proposal and will continue to gather public and stakeholder comments before approving or rejecting the proposal in part or in full. DOH and EPA will hold a public meeting to receive oral and written comments in November. A public notice will be distributed at least 14 days prior to the meeting, announcing the date and location.

The DOH and EPA invite the public to review the document and email written comments to [email protected] or [email protected] or mail comments to the Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch, 2827 Waimano Home Road, #100, Pearl City, Hawaii 96782, ATTN: Red Hill.

To help the public better understand their plan, the Navy will be presenting their proposal at a public meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the O‘ahu Veterans Center located at 1298 Kukila Street in Honolulu.
