CURRENT DATA

In 2017, Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) published an updated Hawaii HIV Epidemiological Profile. The Hawaii HIV Epidemiological Profile reviews 2015 HIV/AIDS data. Highlights of HIV Epidemiological Profile findings (1):

  • 2,519 persons living with HIV in Hawaii.
  • In 2015, 86% of persons newly diagnosed linked to care within 1 month.
  • In 2015, 79% of PLWH receive any care
  • In 2015, 51% of PLWH were retained in care

The CDC estimates about 1 in 10 PWLH in Hawaii are undiagnosed, leaving a small number of persons unaware of their status (2).

These overall numbers are just part of the picture. Disparities exist within racial/ethnic groups, age groups, transmission risk, geographic location, sex and gender identity. Social determinants of health play a role in persons abilities to access HIV testing, PrEP/PEP for HIV prevention, medical providers and HIV treatment for HIV care.
