Participation in Hawaii-BRFSS

Perhaps you or someone you know has been called by our survey contractor, Omnitrak Group, Inc. If you received a call from 808-528-4050, on behalf of the Hawaii Department of Health and CDC, asking you to answer some questions about your health and health practices, this is a legitimate phone call. Please consider participating in the survey.

How are potential respondents selected?

Survey participants are randomly selected from houses across Hawaii with listed and unlisted landline telephone numbers, as well as cell phone numbers. Participants must be at least 18 years old and live in Hawaii.

How did you get my phone number?

The CDC sends Hawaii DOH a sample of randomly selected landline and cell phone numbers to survey.

How do I know this is a legitimate survey?

Will my personal information be recorded and shared?

We will not collect any personal information that may identify you. The information you provide is strictly confidential and cannot be traced back to you. You can skip any questions that you believe are too personal.

Will any government services I receive be affected if I choose to participate?

No services you receive from governmental agencies (Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) will be affected if you choose to participate in the survey. The survey is completely anonymous and will not change any services you may receive from governmental agencies.

When is the interview conducted?

Interviews are conducted throughout the year, from noon to 9 pm on weekdays, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on Saturdays, and 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sundays.

How long does the survey take?

The survey takes about 25 minutes to complete. If you do not have time to complete the survey when contacted, the interviewer will arrange to call you back at a more convenient time.

What type of information is collected?

The survey collects information on health and health-related behaviors, such as access to health care, tobacco use, and chronic conditions (e.g. heart disease and diabetes, asthma, etc.) and demographic characteristics including, age, sex, race, ethnicity, education level, and income.

Why are my responses important?

The survey results help identify health problems, track trends, create new health programs, and improve existing ones.
