Did you know, the incidence of sickle cell disease (SCD) in African Americans living in the Northwest Region of the United States is 1 in 2,050. According to the CDC (2022), SCD affects approximately 100,00 people in the U.S.. Individuals with sicklecell disease have abnormal shaped hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carry oxygen to the body. Abnormal, or “sickle-shaped”, hemoglobin cannot carry enough oxygen to parts of the body.
