Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Program
Social Security pays benefits to people who are unable to work because they have a medical condition that is expected to last at least one year or result in death. Eligibility for SSDI will depend on your work history.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits
The Supplemental Security Income is a federal welfare program that pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources.

You can apply for SSI at the same time you apply for SSDI (see above). There will be a section in the SSDI application that asks if you would also like to apply for SSI.
If you would like to apply for SSI only, you can call the Social Security Office at 1-800-772-1213 and a representative will set up an appointment with you to apply for SSI over the phone or in person with the local office in Hawai’i.
If you are 65 years of age or older and/or are living with a disability, you can apply for Medicare. Eligibility for Medicare depends on your work history.
To apply for Medicare, you can contact the Social Security Office at 1-800-772-1213 and a representative will set up an appointment with you to apply for Medicare over the phone or in person. You can also click HERE to apply for Medicare online.
