The Ho`oikaika Partnership is a coalition of more than 40 Maui County agencies and individuals committed to preventing child abuse and neglect. Through public awareness activities and training events, the Ho‘oikaika Partnership aims to reduce the incidence and prevalence of child maltreatment in Maui County.

Over the last year the Partnership has focused on teaching service providers to use the protective factors framework as a strategy to prevent child abuse. On February 12-13, 2015, the Partnership hosted a two-day conference on Molokai: “Bringing the Protective Factors Framework to Life in Your Work.”

Maui Child and Family Services helped organize the training, which was held at the OHA conference room. Carole Vida, Cheryl Tagorda, and Renee Hatch led the training. They are certified through the National Alliance of Children’s Trust and Prevention Funds as Protective Factors trainers.

The theme of the training was that the protective factors are the strengths and resources that families can draw on when life gets difficult. Developing protective factors in communities and families has been shown to reduce child abuse and neglect before it happens.

Participants learned specific strategies for cultivating the five protective factors in the families they work with:

  • Parental Resilience
  • Social Connections
  • Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development
  • Concrete Support in Times of Need
  • Children’s Social and Emotional Competence

Information about the protective factors is available from Child Welfare Information Gateway at:
