Adolescent Wellness Programs

The Adolescent Wellness Program staff networks with public and private groups,  community organizations, and youth to provide training and technical assistance  relating to adolescent development.  These include the following:

Hawaii’s Adolescent Wellness Plan: Laulima In Action Framework for statewide adolescent wellness strategic plan developed by the  Hawaii Adolescent Wellness Team in 1997.  Laulima is also the framework for  teen pregnancy prevention in Hawaii.

Abstinence Grant The Boys and Girls Club implements the nationally recognized “Smart Moves”  curriculum in four sites.  This curricula targets 9-12 year old youth  through resistance skill education, peer mentoring, family/significant adult  and community-based activities to support the program.

High and Middle School Surveys In collaboration with Department of Education (DOE) and other Department of Health(DOH)  branches, the Hawaii School Health Survey Committee supports the implementation  of adolescent population based surveys to monitor risk behaviors that  contribute to mortality, morbidity and social problems among youth.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention Training In partnership with Department of Human Services (DHS) through the  Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) funds, MCHB provides  oversight of DHS contracts with the University of Hawaii for  teen pregnancy prevention training for K-12 grade teachers, counselors,  and administrators; the DOE’s Peer Education Program teachers and  middle and high school students; and the Parent and Child Education  Program (PACE) for elementary students and their parents through a  puppet show and interactive activities.
