Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women and Children (KMCWC) is proud to announce that the hospital has officially received re-designation approval from the Hawai‘i State Department of Health as a Level III Pediatric Trauma Center.  An on-site evaluation was conducted at KMCWC on May 28 and 29, 2015, by a team of trauma surveyors from the Trauma Center Association of America (TCAA). The trauma surveyors verified that KMCWC meets the state criteria for trauma center designation and recommended approval to the Hawai‘i State Department of Health officials. The DOH was present at the time of the evaluation and subsequently granted the Level III Pediatric re-designation status to KMCWC, effective July 15, 2015.

Dr. Devin Puapong, FACS, Trauma Medical Director, and Casey Golden, MPH, MSN, APRN, Trauma Program Coordinator, led the efforts to achieve re-designation. KMCWC had to achieve strict standards and demonstrate that the facility is staffed and equipped to provide comprehensive, life-saving care for injured children. As a designated Level III Pediatric Trauma Center, KMCWC has acknowledged its resources, including specialists for emergency resuscitation, surgery, intensive care, and rehabilitation for pediatric trauma patients.

To earn trauma center re-designation, KMCWC had to demonstrate the high level of care provided to patients by our expert surgeons, physicians, nurses and health care professionals. The surveyors noted many strengths of the KMCWC Pediatric Trauma program, including patient care area expansion plans, family-centered care, the performance improvement committee, injury prevention outreach, and the comprehensive rehabilitation and support services.

Pediatric trauma center designation highlights KMCWC’s commitment to quality health care and patient safety. The KMCWC Pediatric Trauma Program will continue to focus efforts on collaborating with community partners to provide optimal care for injured children throughout Hawai‘i.
