About the Clinic
The STD/HIV Clinic is a specialty clinic which has been providing testing, diagnosis, and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to Hawai‘i’s community since the early 1960s. The Clinic is the only Hawai‘i Department of Health clinic providing confidential, free, convenient walk-in services to all people age 14 and older.
The STD HIV Clinic operates to provide services to people who have no other access to medical care for the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections.
We provide for free ASL services for the hearing-impaired, and interpreter/translation services for those whose primary language is other than English.
Your records at the Diamond Head Health Clinic are always kept confidential. This means that information regarding testing, diagnosis and treatment services provided at the Clinic is privileged. It will only be released to you or your referring physician upon your written request unless otherwise required by law.
Clinic medical records are protected from release by:
- The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996
- Hawai‘i Administrative Rules title 11, chapter 156
- Hawai‘i Revised Statutes (H.R.S.) §325-101
All staff sign a confidentiality oath to keep confidential any and all information having to do with our patients. The oath specifically states that staff will not divulge any information regarding patients to unauthorized persons even after termination of their employment. Our staff understands that the unauthorized release of information will result in disciplinary action or termination of their employment.
Our services are offered for the benefit of our patients and our community. As a result, our services may vary depending on public health needs, in addition to changes in staffing or funding. Availability may be limited due to funding, staffing, and eligibility criteria.
STD Testing & Services
Specially trained healthcare providers are available for evaluation, testing and treatment for common sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, non-gonoccocal urethritis (NGU), and vaginal infections (trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, yeast).
In addition, individualized STD patient education, counseling, and confidential partner notification and treatment services are available.
HIV Testing & Services
Rapid testing for the antibodies to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) may be offered based on risk assessment by staff. The test specimen will be a small amount of blood from a fingerstick, and results will be available within 20 minutes.
Partner Services is a voluntary prevention activity for persons who are living with HIV and their sex and needle-sharing partners, with the goals of:
- prevention of HIV transmission to uninfected partners;
- helping partners get earlier access to individualized counseling, HIV testing, medical treatment, and other prevention activities
Specially trained counselors discuss the different ways sex and needle-sharing partners can be informed of possible exposure to HIV without revealing the identity of the person with HIV. This service is available to those diagnosed through the STD/HIV Clinic, as well as those under the care of a private physician.
