HAWAII COMMUNITY GENETICS

Hawaii Community Genetics (HCG) was created as a collaborative effort of the Department of Health (DOH), Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA), Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, Queen’s Medical Center, and the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. In the future, more local partners will join the collaborative group. Dr. Robert Wallerstein and Dr. Leah Dowsett are the clinical geneticists at HCG.

Dr. Robert Wallerstein comes to our state from California where he worked as a clinical geneticist and Director of the Silicon Valley Genetics Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and American Board of Medical Genetics. Dr. Wallerstein has extensive experience working with pediatric, prenatal, and adult patients.

Leah Ke`ala`aumoe Dowsett, MD, is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii and a clinical geneticist at Hawaii Community Genetics.  She completed her undergraduate studies in both Biological Sciences and Psychology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, earning dual degrees.  Following medical school at JABSOM, she completed her Pediatrics residency at Kapi`olani Medical Center for Women & Children in Honolulu where she conducted research on fatty acid oxidation disorders in Pacific Islanders.  She is a board-certified pediatrician.  Dr. Dowsett finished the fellowship in Medical Genetics and Genomics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania.  In fellowship, her research was focused on genetic technologies and underrepresented minorities.  Her clinical focus includes general genetics, dysmorphology, and inborn errors of metabolism.   Her primary research focuses on improving genomic health disparities in underrepresented minority populations, Native Hawaiian health, and expanding the availability of genomic sequencing and phenotypic information to her patients and families.

Clinical support services at HCG are provided by Sansan Lee, Sandra Dreike, and Lianne Hasegawa-Evans (Kapiolani Medical Center); and Gwen Palmer, Michelle Maeda, Lila Aiyar and Michelle Takemoto (DOH).  HCG continues to contract with the Stanford University School of Medicine Genetics Program to provide periodic support for clinical pediatric and adult genetic services and genetics education.
